DeVillers Looks at Possible Changes in Class B

Whenever there are changes brought up about the state of Class B athletics, I have to be honest...I always kind of perk up. Class B sports are what I grew up with in high school and what I followed professionally for a couple of years. Sadly, what is happening is that Class B is changing without anyone changing anything about it.

The Herald's Greg DeVillers dove into a story that examines some of the changes that are proposed for the 2010-11 school year. Basically the changes will effect the fall and winter seasons, dealing specifically with basketball and volleyball.

I'm interested to see what the response is by the general population. The changes will certainly have an effect on who makes tournaments and basically there will be more emphasis on winning early.

Anyway, without writing in circles too much and denying you the joy of the story, if you are a fan of Class B sports at all, you should probably click here to take a look at the changes in the DeVillers story. It is certainly worth a look-see.

I would like to see the tournaments change from being able to lose a game to winner take all. 16 districts, winner advances. 8 regions, winner advances.

I think tournament time should not be forgiving. However I would like to see two teams (winning in the semifinals of the district tournament perhaps) making the region tournament. I like the idea of a two-game region tournament just because if only one team from each district advances to the region tournament, it is just one game and not much of a tournament.

personally i would also like to see the regular season mean a little more, and not just count towards seeding, but i'm unsure how you would go about doing that unless you just took the top few teams in the regular season standings and jumped immediately into region play.

as it stands right now, the regular season is essentially meaningless because you aren't eliminated and it seems as though a lot of teams use the regular season as an extended preseason where wins and losses don't really matter.

There are 122 teams in state class b basketball. One way you could make every game meaningful is to split into 32 districts. There would be 26 districts with 4 teams and 6 districts with 3 teams. What this presents is 8 regions with 4 teams each in the next round. Then 8 region winners to state with 8 teams to compete. All single elimination. You either win or go home.

I don't know if I'm completely sold on eliminating the third-place game. I always thought those games had a tendency of starting slow, but a lot of times turned out to be really good games.

Teams and players were playing for pride and it gave fans one last chance to see certain players before their careers concluded. Of course, when these games (which are essentially just exhibitions because winning the game doesn't get the team anything) go into overtime it can get kind of annoying as far as the climate of the championship game.

But I really do like where your idea is headed.
